THE HISTORY OF STEAM ENGINE

Image
The early development of locomotives and automotive brought the birth of steam engine. The steam engine was thought to be the final solution to the search for a liable motives but it success was never achieved. Though the first steam engine was invented by Thomas Newcomen in 1712 and it was used to pump water. Study shows,  that energy is needed for anything to be done. That is why even the early development of locomotives uses coal as it source of energy of which was then the world favorite fuel and it powered anything, even the ill-fated steam planes invented by American scientist Samuel P. Langley.                         Steam engine In steam engines, the engines takes energy stored in coal and converts it to heat. The heat generated forms the steam which expands the piston cylinder causing the pressure to increase and forcing the piston to rise above atmospheric pressure. The power stroke occurs when cold ...

ALTERNATING SYSTEM AND ITS BASICS

Image
Fortunately,an engine can run without the battery,i.e after starting the engine the battery can be unplugged and if the alternating system is sound,it will continue running. Unfortunately,it might cause some defects to the electrical system when run for an extended period. Likewise the engine can run without an alternator for a short period of time because of loss of power in the cells. Oftentimes the alternator goes bad and the operator fails to identify it until it gradually leads to total breakdown. The alternator is a mechanical device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. In automobile the alternator is used to charge the battery and to power all electrical systems when the engine is running. It changes the spinning motion of the fan belt into electrical energy. The alternator carryout several function to enhance the efficiency of the automobile and comfort of the operator. Modern alternators are constructed with built in regulator circuit that  switch on...

THE BASICS OF THE COMPRESSION IGNITION ENGINE

Image
The compression ignition engine[C.I engines] also known as the diesel engine is invented by Dr. Rodolph Diesel. The C.I engine is an internal combustion engine in which combustion occurs as a result of the compression of the air to a temperature sufficient enough to ignite the fuel. There are several similarities and minor difference between the C.I engines and the gasoline powered engines(spark ignition engines,S.I engines). The components such as the crankshaft, camshaft, piston, valves etc they both share in common.  The same cycle of operation governs both for the four stroke and two stroke engine process. However the diesel engines can easily be recognized by the absence of the ignition system and other factors such as Injection of fuel is done via an injection pump They are noisy and produces pollutants easily It produces more power and torque Overtime, diesel engines have received massive success in the construction of heavy duty trucks, construction equipment ,powe...

THE TURBOCHARGER SERIES

Image
The value of the turbo charger in an automobile is unknown to a few engineers and its users, because they lack the proper knowledge on these points of the component itself. http://d3e98kcom2u4ch.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/oldblog/2016/09/turbocharger-operation-diagram.jpg What is the value of the turbocharger? What is it made of? How does it work? Where can it applied? Likely problem encountered Ignorantly we think the main reason motor A generates more power, higher velocity, consumes less fuel, sometimes environmental friendly than motor B is because of the engine structure or size. But there is one way to improve an engine which is the turbocharger. The turbocharger is an exhaust-gas driven component of an engine that increases the volumetric efficiency of air in an engine in order to increase its power.  It consist of a casing, impellers and shaft. Generally, the charge[mixture of fuel and air] that flows into the combustion chamber produces the t...

16 EARLY INNOVATIONS THAT BIRTH THE MECHANICS OF TODAY

Image
Mechanical engineering  is a very wide discipline that, effectively, covers anything that moves.  Its breadth is due, in part, from its need to cover the design and manufacture of anything and everything in a moving system. This ranges from a system's smallest components to the completed, sometimes enormous, machine as a whole. Throughout history some  innovations  have come to define mechanics as we know it today, the following are no exception. These engineering innovations range from the any one of the classical 'simple machine' to complex concepts such as  flight . This list is far from exhaustive and in no particular order. 1. The Aeolipile Was an Early Steam Reaction Turbine The  Aeolipile   was the world's first rotating steam engine or more technically correct, a steam reaction turbine. It was devised by the great Heron of Alexandria in the  1st Century AD  and described it in great detail in his book  Pneumatica . ...

THE WORLD MOST POWERFUL WIND TURBINE INSTALLED BY VATTENFALL

Image
Wind turbines are mechanical device that converts the wind's  kinetic energy into electrical energy. The recently dubbed ‘world most powerful' wind turbine of which in a single rotation can reportedly power an average UK home for a day was installed by  Vattenfall . Vattenfall is  a Swedish energy company that has installed the  8.8-megawatt  capacity offshore wind turbine at the European Offshore Wind Deployment Center (EOWDC) off the coast of Scotland.    Wind Turbine Vattenfall says they plan to add another mega turbine to the site, sourced from the company Vestas. The EOWDC will be used as a site to test 11 other powerful turbines. Swedish owned Vattenfall has a goal to excise fossil fuels from its portfolio within one generation. The turbine will displace 134,128 metric tons of carbon dioxide.   “The EOWDC, through its innovative approach to cost reduction and pioneering technologies, leads the industry drive tow...
