CONSTRUCTION PROCEDURES OF AN OFFICE CHAIR

The construction procedures of an executive office chair are stated below

  • Selection of materials
  • Engineering drawing/sketches
  • Measuring and marking out dimension
  • Cutting operations
  • Drilling operations
  • Formation of shapes
  • Joining operations
  • Upholstery
  • Surface finishing

SELECTION OF WORKING MATERIALS
This involves the consideration of the best materials for the construction of the chair. Materials such as galvanized mild steel pipe, mild steel rod, mild steel plate,  leathers, foam, rubber hose, electrode, paint, screw nut,  bolt and adhesive.

ENGINEERING DRAWING/SKETCHES
Engineering drawing is the first thing to do when constructing the executive office chair, it gives the graphical conception of the chair. It helps to remain focus on the ideal chair to be constructed.

MEASURING AND MARKING OUT
This involves the use of vernier calliper and measuring tape to take a precise dimension of the work piece. Tools like scriber and talc are also used to mark out the measured components. The trammel are used to mark out rectangular like seat rest and the punch used to carryout marking operation on the metal plate.

CUTTING TO SHAPE
The involves cutting off the marked out components to their required shape. Tools like the hacksaw, vice, grinding machine and scissors are used to carryout this operation.

DRILLING OPERATION
This involves the boring of holes into the metal plate,  its done for the easy passage of screw. The hand drilling machine can be used for this operation.

FORMATION TO SHAPE
This involves the bending of the mild steel rod using a jig. The rod was placed in between two rods of the jig and was gradually hammered to get the required shape.

JOINING AND ASSEMBLING
This is the process of joining the components of the workpiece. This is done by merging the components and joined together by the electrode in the tong of the welding machine.

UPHOLSTERY PROCESS
This involves the shaping of the metal and the foam to the same diameter of the measured seat rest,  to fit into it very well. Foam of the same size is attached to the seat rest to assist the upholstery gum and then wrapped with fabric material.

SURFACE FINISHING
This is the last operation to be carried out after operations like, marking out, drilling, assembling, upholstery and others are carried out. It involves smoothening of metal surface to beautify the chair and to ensure a smooth edge and a shining appearance. The emery cloth, file and electroplating are needed to be done.

Note: A good office chair enhances office productivity and comfort.
