INTRODUCTION TO PUMPS

Pumps are devices that are used to lift fluid. There are two types of pump

  • Positive displacement pumps
  • Centrifugal pumps

The positive displacement pumps consists of a large cavity for suction and a smaller cavity for the discharge. The suction valve expands as the fluid flows through, then forces it through the discharge valve as a result of the pressure created. The positive displacement pumps are classified as follows

  • Rotary pump
  • Reciprocating pump

Centrifugal pumps
The centrifugal pump uses the impeller to convert and direct the flow of fluid through the discharge valve. They are classified as a

  • Single stage
  • Multi stage
    centrifugal pump

Pumps are used to transfer fluid from a lower level to a higher level and also
Pumps are used to increase flow rate.
